Garbage Blues:
Something Stinks at
Toronto's City Hall
City Politicians will force everyone in Toronto to separate their garbage a great idea on the surface until the fine print is read: Toronto residents
get to pay for the privilege of sorting their refuse.
"As of July 1, 2008, property owners of multi-unit residential buildings pay a fee based on how much garbage the
building generates during the billing period and the number of units in the building. The new Solid Waste Management Fee will
appear with water fees on a new, combined Toronto Water/Solid Waste Utility Bill," according to the City of Toronto's
Solid Waste Management website.
So as of July 1 every apartment building/co-op in Toronto has received their green bins so they can reduce their
waste and as a result reduce their fee right? Wrong!
To make sure everyone understood the City's Solid Waste Management team offered
Information Sessions, pointing out
"Green Bin Organics
– Implementation in 2008 is unlikely due to lack of
processing capacity
– In In-suite container distribution will begin once processing".
But, "there is no fee for recycling, bulky items or, once it is available, Green Bin organics."
Wait a minute! One way to reduce the fee is to use Green Bins but implementation in 2008 is unlikely? Sounds like another tax grab to us - if it's
really about going green then there is no need to implement the fees before the ability to reduce the fees is made available.
Something stinks at Toronto's City Hall!
