Dear Stephen Harper

Dear Canada:

Vote!

One of the privileges of living in a democracy is the right to vote. That so few use it is sad; though done for various reasons. On October 14th, Canada will hold a Federal Election. The Toronto Tribune strongly urges everyone who is legally able to vote to do so in every election: municipal, provincial and federal.

Voting is not the only right we have and yet few use it. Even fewer take up their other rights. MPP Cheri DiNovo said, at the CAPA celebration, "Voting is one way to exercise your rights. It is a small way." She listed a few of the others:

  • Rise-up
  • Organize
  • Speak Out

DiNovo credited longtime activist Don Weitz for standing up for his beliefs "so valiantly, for so long," adding "It makes a difference. Your voice counts."

First you have to use your voice. The Toronto Tribune doesn't like the choices available in the Canadian election. It is more of the same, an illness our politicans share with their cronies south of our border. McGuinty promises to overturn the excesses and mistakes of the Mike Harris government; since reaching power he has left most in place. We don't expect politicians to tell the truth, we should, but we don't. It's easy to believe that it's not worth the effort. It is.

Vote!

With our kindest regards,

The Toronto Tribune
